Light & Land One-Day Workshop - Tutored by Astrid McGechan and Light & Land Founder Charlie Waite

The ‘Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City’ was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 - testament to the historical significance of the development of port and city, which accelerated in the 18th century and has taken an interesting positive turn lately.

We will start our photography workshop at Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral, a spectacular building, the likes of which one would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The group will then move to the city’s waterfront with its eclectic mix of old and new architecture, where we will have countless opportunities to capture Liverpool’s cosmopolitan character and rustic charm. 

Liverpool was described as the “New York of Europe” by the Bankers’ Magazine as far back as 1851. That was a reflection of its status as a powerhouse of commerce and industry. In its heyday, Liverpool’s commercial success exceeded even that of London. Its wealth gave rise to the construction of grand buildings, and almost every architectural style from the last 300 years can be found in the city, with more than 2500 buildings having listed status. 

Approaching the city from the water offers a unique perspective on its distinctive waterfront, with the Pier Head and the Three Graces at its centre, so we’ll hop on to the ferry for a short round trip. You might find yourself humming Gerry Marsden’s “Ferry, Cross the Mersey”, or perhaps one of the Beatles’ songs, for the rest of the day. The Beatles are of course at the centre of Liverpool’s reputation as a cultural hub and their legacy is ever-present to the discerning visitor.  

The abundance of subject matter will allow us to use various techniques and shoot in colour or black & white, capture strong graphics, abstract shapes, colours and reflections as well as street scenes and architecture. Charlie and I will be on hand throughout the day, to help you develop your vision and explore different approaches, so that you can be sure to return with memorable images of one of England’s most exciting waterfront cities.
