Light & Land Workshop - Tutored by Astrid McGechan and Light & Land Founder Charlie Waite

Founded by the Romans, later called Jórvík by the Vikings, York has played an important role in England’s history for close to 2000 years. It is a city of great beauty, enticing visitors with its timeless charm, which makes it a photographer’s dream. Our workshop will be based in the medieval centre, where we can best appreciate York’s rich and colourful character. Short strolls will take us down narrow streets, little changed since the Middle Ages, and some of the easily missed Snickelways. 

The most prominent building within the city walls is York Minster, seat of the Archbishop of York, and one of the largest gothic cathedrals in Europe. The West Window and the Great East Window, both constructed in the 14th/15th centuries, form the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. 

The variety of subject matter in York will give you ample opportunity to utilise a range of techniques and approaches. Be it shooting in black and white, working with shallow depth of field, abstract, street or architectural photography – Charlie and I will help you develop and refine your vision and the technical skills to capture images you will treasure.

Inside the Minster, we will spend time exploring the fine details of this magnificent building. With light levels naturally lower inside, the cathedral provides the perfect setting to try out some alternative techniques, such as ICM (intentional camera movement) and producing multiple exposures.
